Graduating from prestigious Guilford School of Music and Drama in 2021-22, Connor Porter is at the beginning of his journey as an actor.
His talents kept him busy after he graduated, and he secured job after job. With the recent actors and writers strike in the USA starting to take effect, Connor’s agent had noticed that the big American companies’ production had died down and that opportunities had all but stopped there. For Connor and his actor friends the opportunities lay with tapes and auditions for indie projects.
The plot is still under wraps, however, Over the Shoulder sat down with Connor Porter to talk about his first leading role in “Animals”.
What was the audition like?
For the audition, the script was six or seven pages containing big monologues. I thought I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do this! I just didn’t have any time. I was running to the toilet (whilst was working as a bartender in a Drag Bar) every five minutes, trying to learn it.
Then I did the audition and I loved it. When auditioning a sign for me that I’ve noticed is when I’m enjoying it, it’s clear it’s something I really want.
What drew you into the project with Greg Cruttwell?
I think mainly the script. I loved the idea of going from my first job being in a little role to having something you could dig your teeth into. I also thought the story was great and it was heart-breaking but also quite juicy for an actor.
I read up about it and read up Greg. I realized that Greg was from Naked. Naked is mine and my friends’ favourite film. I thought, I got to work with this guy.
Which scene was the most challenging?

The one in the car, because that’s the longest one. I remember doing it and if you run through it and you take your time with it, it’s probably 10 minutes.
The headspace the character was in was a lot to take in. He was revisiting trauma and there was a kind of foreshadowing in it a bit.
I also liked the idea of Greg and his directional style being “the not to act type thing”. A lot of the takes are me from behind my back and I didn’t expect that. So that was a shock to me. The shot with the character focusing on his house was probably the most challenging because of the amount of dialogue.
We filmed from different angles, and I learned a lot from that. When I went to see the film, I learned that with each take and each angle you split up the action a little bit more.
How long did it take to shoot the whole film?
Three days. On the first day we did voiceover stuff and shots of me driving.
Then the second day we did the big scene, the dialogue scene. Then we did the beach bit as well on that day. That was all one day. The fight scene was a week later or a few days later. It was in a different location and that was back in London. That was a bit mad.
The fact was it was all a bit crazy!
What was crazy about it?

For the fight scene Greg Cruttwell knew this person and he had a garage with a woman in an office next door or something. It was just weird!
We walked over the scene and walked over the moves for the fight. It took four days, but actual shooting days were three. On the fight day it was with eight guys that I’ve never met.
Do you have any funny anecdotes from the set?
At Greg’s house in Suffolk, we had meals made for us that were really nice.
It was lovely. I just remember us having a really good time around the table. It was like some little family for the two days filming there.
I had a great experience. Everyone was really nice. I want to say that because on the other jobs that I’ve worked on afterwards I’ve not had a crew like that. I didn’t feel fakeness.
What do you think Greg’s directional style is. What was it like working with him?
I don’t know if he has a style. I suppose he probably approaches things differently every time but for me it was like he trusted me a lot. We met up and we got on and he just allowed me to do what I wanted to do with it. At first, I was a bit like I want more direction because I’m good at redirection. I enjoy getting directed. Greg was quite hands off, but in the end, that kind of helped. He just said little things which were like gems. I just remember doing the scene in the car and he was just “take your time and just really think what you’re saying”.
You know, the Scorsese direction type thing, but those little things like that can be helpful. I think you don’t need a lot. I’ve prepared all my lines. It’s just when I’m falling off the rails a little bit, help me back on.
Did you learn anything from your role in Animals?
It was just more the thing of how cameras work and how to conduct yourself around people on set. I suppose, bits of the character, I’m like, you have a choice.
Do you have any other projects coming out?
I’m allowed to say one of them. It’s a Harlan Colburn series. It’s called Fool Me Once and it’s got Michelle Keegan, Joanna Lumley and Richard Armitage in it.
My role, I’m not allowed to say anything about it. I’ve got a role in four episodes.
Park the Bus would like to thank Connor Porter for sharing insights into the world of acting and his experience on the upcoming film “Animals” and we congratulate him on a great performance.
We wish the him future success and he is welcome back to Over the Shoulder any time.
