Heartstopper Season 3 continues with the growing pains of these very likeable teenagers.

One phrase, “an emotional roller-coaster” that’s the only way I can describe this season.

You know when a show is amazing, because you just sit down in your comfy sofa and are just engrossed with the storyline. This is one of those programmes. The saying, “things get worse before they get better,” is the optimal phrase of this season.

The Heartstopper cast are growing up and so is this Netflix Show. The third season of the TV adaptation of Alice Osman’s massive cult graphic novels hit finds itself continuing to be gentle but has now become more mature. In the last season there were hints of Charlie’s eating disorder, and this was one of the main themes of the storyline, however it still has its heartfelt scenes with the plot as well. Nick finds himself trying to work out how to support Charlie the best way possible through something far beyond a teenage capacity. Charlie’s scenes with his therapist Geoff (Eddie Marsan) is authentic and Geoff helps his character through it all. It still has the Heartstopperesque feel we all know and love.

Each episode still follows the Heartstopper formula. This season having GCSE’s, summer holidays, christmas and birthdays. The programme flows well from the first episode to the last.

When Kit Connor who plays Nick said in an interview that Episode 4 (Journey) was going to be everyone’s favourite I think he might be right. This episode in particular was beautifully shot and stayed true to its comic book roots. They also take you on a journey with Nicks thoughts at the beginning of the episode and then switching to Charlie’s point of view which ties up the episode perfectly. The film that Tao (William Gao) makes for Charlie was the sweetest thing and you are probably going to cry. It is a proper tearjerker. Pre warning everyone now.

One of the clever aspects of the show that I liked was the use of Tao’s camera and how the director Andy Newbery used footage with an old-style camera, so it brings new and old to the screen. The episodes aren’t too long, they are the right amount of running time, so the audience doesn’t say “it drags too long, and I am getting bored of it now”.

Hollywood star Olivia Coleman (as Nicks mum) was in the last two seasons and now they have Johnathan Bailey and Hailey Atwell for this series. It is a nice touch.

During season 1 and 2 we didn’t see much of Charlie’s sister Tori, so it was nice to see her having a bigger role and having more of an impact on his life. Moreover, some of Issacs lines this season are going to be iconic, especially at the beginning and he is proving to be my favourite character.

Similarly, Elle (Yasmin Finney) takes a more of a demanding role and you get to see the challenges and the realities of being a trans teenager girl and her place in the world. Another theme is having sex and when you are ready to take the relationships to the next level. These are important issues that face many young people, so it is good to see these themes coming to life and being sympathetically explored. There is one scene between Tao and Elle where his handling of his relationship with Elle is performed with grace and his communication skills were excellent too.

The music translates so well in this season. Beautifully done and helps the viewer inner lives of the characters and sets up the mood.

There were also some easter egg moments this season with some iconic lines returning which was clever.  If you haven’t given Heartstopper a go I would definitely recommend it as it is such a heart-warming and easy show to watch. It is one of those romance dramas that you can get all cosy and put a fire on and just binge watch.
