It’s been such a long time since I’ve read critics slating a film this badly right after its release. Rotten Tomatoes critics rating is 15% and I tend to agree with them on this occasion, all pretty damning although the audience reviews are on 72%.

I’m quite surprised about the poor rating because it has such a good cast with the star power of Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown who are both amazing actors. The iconic Russo Brothers that directed most of the marvel movies made this film, but their magic touch has left them as this sci-fi movie doesn’t click at all. You can’t blame the budget as it cost a lot to make but you wonder where the money was spent.
If you were born in the 90’s you might feel nostalgic for the show Kid Cosmo. The concept of fighting a robot population is a nod to the threat of AI, or perhaps I am reading too much into it!
It is set in the 90’s where an orphaned teenager (Millie Bobby Brown) must venture with a smuggler Keats (Chris Pratt) to discover the fate of her clever younger brother. There isn’t any depth to the storyline, but maybe that is what people want, they just want to watch something not taxing or have it on in the background working from home.

I was slightly disappointed as the cast was good, but they were fighting an uphill battle with a poor script and you never believed in them. This might be a controversial take but ever since Millie Bobby Brown finished Eleven in Stranger Things and Enola Holmes all the other films that she has done, while not being bad you feel she could have made better choices of roles.
It’s has amazing music, such as The Clash and visually it looks stunning and very futuristic. It was the lack an imaginative and soulless script that let it down and I had to skip some of it as it was very predictable. I was bored which is never a good sign in an action film. Sometimes, low budget science fiction films are better, think the first Terminator.
I would be interested to see what you think, however if you give it a miss, I would not be judgemental. The Electric State dragged on so much it inspired me to write a short review to counter balance it.
