Hello Listener, the popularity of true crime and podcasts are matched together perfectly in this new musical now being performed at the Ambassador Theatre in the West End.
This refreshing original musical production that it is not a re-hash of Disney movies, iconic films or old theatrical hits being brought back for the umpteenth time.
The play was originally shown in 2022 at the Edinburgh Festival and its running time has been expanded from 70 minutes to 120 minutes for its run in the West End.

The story follows two girls who produce a podcast about true crime from the Northern city of Hull. Kathy and Stella ate outsiders and very much rely on their friendship to cope with the trials and tribulations of modern life.

The chance to investigate the murder of their true crime hero and local podcast celebrity Felicia played by (Hannah Jane Fox) is the basis of this heartwarming story of true platonic love and the pressure of growing up and finding your place in the world.
Rebekah Hinds and Bronte Barbe play the title characters and both excel musically and in their portrayal of vulnerable young women who find meaning in their affection for each other and the passion they have in solving crime. However, Bronte as Kathy shone as the shy girl with only one friend and dreams of being in the world of crime.
Using the central format of a podcast, played directly to the audience is a clever idea and helps involve the viewer in the twist and turns of the plot.

Given the relatively few suspects, the storyline successfully hides the murderer’s identity until the end. The gasps from the audience when the killer was revealed is proof that the red herrings posted along the way were ingenious.
The musical numbers were catchy and helped propel the action forward rather than being forced in. The characters performed the songs admirable and you could see that they were enjoying themselves.
The sets were minimalistic which worked as you could focus on the characters and the central whodunnit.

Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder was hilarious. There were many laugh out loud moments and even the touching elements to the story were laced together with a wry humour.
I would love watch new shows that highlight the depth of talent that given the chance, offers original and compelling entertainment to the West End.
Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder succeeds in all departments and is a welcome addition to this who love material.
Give this musical a go and help new writers and performers get a chance on theatre’s biggest stage.
You will not be disappointed!
