A newbie’s perspective of Doctor Who

This is a take on looking into the “whoniverse” with fresh eyes from a newbie’s perspective. Considering this is the 15th Doctor, I know I am way behind in fully appreciating the cult classic status of this much loved world-wide legendary show.

But here goes.

I have only watch bits and pieces of Doctor Who, mainly from when I was little, but when Ncuti Gatwa, who I am a big fan of was named the next Doctor I had to give it a proper go and I was hooked.

Firstly, Ncuti’s acting skills are exquisite and I feel that although the show is very sci-fi his humanity and empathy shine through. He does this without losing the eccentricity that is fundamental to the character of Dr Who and he is undoubtably for me the finished product from the jump.

Whether Dr Who superfans would agree I don’t know but as I have no experience in comparing him to his predecessors all I can say was that he convinced me.

His sidekick Ruby Sunday, who is played by Millie Gibson is fabulous and between them they had wonderful chemistry. So, hopefully actress Varada Sethu who is to be the new foil for the Dr can equal the success of those who have come before.

No matter how ludicrous the storylines are, they seem to resonate and stay relevant for audiences and much of this is down to the total conviction from all those involved in the production. They invite you to suspend your disbelief and dive into its world.

The Christmas episode was a great way to introduce you to the new gang and gave a great taste of what the season had in store for us.

The first episode ‘Space Babies’ had a promising idea however there wasn’t too much depth to it and the plot drifted. The doctor did give a quick recap of his origins which I liked but it felt slow. The ‘bogeyman’ monster in the basement I didn’t feel was that creepy, but you could feel the terror on the Dr’s face through the screen and I’m sure younger viewers slept with one eye open after watching it.

As far as the other episodes go, they seem to be far more successful. From Bridgerton to travelling back to 1963 each episode got better and better. I seemed to understand the story the more I watched it, getting into the groove of Dr Who’s magic was great fun. Even the cameos such as Shirley Ballas and Johannes Radebe from Strictly come Dancing worked well in the show. I think I’m on the way to becoming a whovian and I would love to hear from a real devotee to hear what they think of the new Dr and the show in general.

The episodes aren’t too long, about 45 minutes which is perfect for a good binge. The sci-fi is not boring and there is always a sense of fun which is refreshing to other downbeat programmes.

I can’t wait to see the next series; the Tardis is in safe hands with this doctor.

As I have only really seen one Dr, I would love to hear who other people think was the best so that I can revisit past episodes.
