MY IDEAL CAST FOR THE NEW HARRY POTTER SERIES COMING ON HBO MAX IN 2026

Posted on February 11, 2025February 11, 2025 by Nyah Barnett

There has been a lot of speculation and rumours on who is going to be in the cast of the new Harry Potter series. As a massive Harry Potter fan, I grew up watching the films and although I was really intrigued with people’s suggestions, I wanted to give it a go for myself.

Its almost impossible to think of anyone else playing these iconic roles, but time moves on and for the next generation of Potter fans the new cast may well be their template.

Here we go then.

I think that Harry, Ron and Hermione and the rest of the young cast must be unknown actors so that they can become embedded in the audience’s mind and the magic can continue. it will be fascinating to see who the youngsters will be. Will they be British or will Hollywood creep in.

Established actors will be vying with each other for the other plum characters.

VOLDEMORT: BILL SKARSGARD

He has got the face and characteristics of Voldemort (he who must not be named) and has done sinister before, such as Pennywise from IT. He has that perfect creepy way about him.

DUMBLEDORE: CHRISTOPH WALTZ

The veteran character actor and favourite of Tarantino has the charisma and quirky charm, as well as the gravitas to play the headmaster of Hogwarts. Oh, he looks great in a beard too.

PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL: HELEN MIRREN

Like Maggie Smith, she has this strong aura about her that demands respect and loyalty.  I think you need someone who is headstrong and can lead with authority. Dame Helen would do a great job.

LUCIUS MALFOY: JAMIE CAMPBELL BOWER

Yes, I know he was Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts Franchise, but he would be an amazing Lucius.

SEVERUS SNAPE: CILIAN MURPHY

I know most people would say he would be a great Voldemort, but I disagree. He has that scary but empathetic look that Alan Rickman gave the role but would add his own depth and colour to the potions master.

SIRIUS BLACK: BEN WHISHAW

Ben Whishaw has the charisma and kindness for Sirius. You would recognise him in Netflix’s recent TV series Black Doves, and you can see Sirius in his every move as the hitman with a heart.

LUPIN: DAVID MORRISSEY

David has this nurturing and caring quality about him, and he even looks like the teacher described in the books.  Can’t think of anyone better.

RUBEUS HAGRID: DAVID HABOUR

It was the first actor that popped into my head. Obviously, no one can replace Robbie Coltrane, but David does have this rugged and oversized kind-hearted soul quality. You can see it when he is playing Hopper in Stranger Things, where he interacts well with the young cast.

MAD EYE MOODY: WOODY HARRELSON

I feel like he can play this character well. He usually plays unique characters and Mad Eye Moody is that! Woody has the look of a defence against the dark arts teacher.

BELLATRIX LESTRANGE: EVA GREEN

I can see why people are saying she could be the next Bellatrix. In the past she has played villain roles, and she can show a darkness inside of her that would be perfect. With her wild hair and exotic features money would be saved on hair and makeup!

DOROLES UMBRIGDE: BLAKE LIVELY

You are probably thinking, what is she on about. However, Blake would only have to play herself and as things are going, she isn’t the most liked person right now.  Dolores isn’t the most liked character, so it is a match made heaven.

ARTHUR WESLEY: RUPERT GRINT

One of the original cast members must come back and Rupert is the man to do it. He would be brilliant playing his dad from the original movies and wouldn’t have to dye his hair.

MOLLY WEASLEY: OLIVIA COLEMAN

Programme Name: Who Do You Think You Are? – TX: n/a – Episode: Generics (No. Generics) – Picture Shows: at the French Protestant Church of London, Soho, London. Olivia Colman – (C) Wall to Wall Media Ltd – Photographer: Stephen Perry

Olivia has made her name playing down to earth people everyone can relate to. She would be perfect as the homely but steely mum of the Weasley clan.
