The Story opens with the murder of a white schoolteacher by an unknown Black person, as his pregnant wife watches. From the very beginning, you know you are in for a tense and uncomfortable story.
Cue ambitious young Black journalist Yvonne (Letitia Wright), who joins the newspaper’s Vanguard desk, covering stories about the Black community. She works under veteran editor Pat (Lorraine Toussaint), who was shaped by the civil rights movement, alongside colleague Neil (Ashley Thomas), a journalist determined to uncover the truth behind every story.
Yvonne is dating a white editor and heir to the paper’s founding family, which immediately complicates the newsroom politics. Frustrated at being sidelined from the bigger stories, she pursues a sensational lead about a teenage gang member allegedly involved in the schoolteacher’s death.
She is willing to do whatever it takes to get the story, while Neil is determined to uncover it as well. But as the line between fact and fiction starts to blur, Yvonne’s ambition begins to test her morals. She finds herself caught in a ruthless world where power matters and the truth can quickly become the first thing sacrificed.
This gripping thriller explores race, representation and what it really takes to succeed in journalism. In a world where misinformation spreads so quickly, it asks an important question: who really gets to own the story?
One of my favourite scenes was when Neil and Yvonne meet in a restaurant to compare where they are with their investigations. Ashley Thomas and Letitia Wright’s chemistry was brilliant, and they worked so well together. There was a real tension between them that made the scene stand out for me.
Letitia Wright really held her own and was fantastic. To be honest, the whole ensemble was unbelievable. Everyone brought something different to the production, and the performances helped keep the story moving.
The pacing was very fast, which worked particularly well for a thriller, and the script was strong. At times, though, the play did feel a little outdated in the way it presented journalism and how people access information. Today, we get our news in so many different ways, from social media platforms like TikTok to reading newspapers and articles online, that the traditional newsroom setting can sometimes feel like a different world. I found myself thinking about how quickly a story can spread today and how much harder it can be to know what information to trust.
I also loved the set and the way it was used throughout the production. Seeing articles being typed onto the projector and the faces of people in the community centre appear helped bring the story to life. These details made the production feel much bigger and added another layer to the story.
The Story is a big, bold and poignant swing at some major issues, backed by a brilliant cast and some really strong performances. It doesn’t shy away from difficult questions about race, power, journalism and who controls the truth.
It’s a thought-provoking thriller with big and compelling ideas, brilliant performances and plenty to talk about afterwards. If you get the chance, you need to go to the theatre and watch it.
